The following excerpt is from a letter addressed to the Lt. Governor, Speaker of the House, and Members of the Texas Senate and House of Representatives by Dr. Trinidad Gonzales in February 2023. The letter requests the establishment of a “Truth and Reconciliation Committee” to investigate and gather evidence addressing state-sanctioned violence and past violations of human rights committed by the Texas Rangers, its deputized agents, and local law enforcement::
“Please see the incomplete list of those killed during the matanza of 1915 and Porvenir Massacre of 1918 as partial evidence for the need to address past impunities by the state. These are only two incidents that do not include other families and communities’ histories of state-sanctioned injustice from across Texas. It is time for the state to finally provide justice to the families and communities from Texas that continue to live with the injustices perpetuated by the state’s actions and inactions.
Respectively,
Trinidad Gonzales
